How to Choose Between Discover Scuba Diving and Open Water

Not sure whether to try a first supervised dive or commit to certification? This guide explains when each option makes sense.

How to Choose Between Discover Scuba Diving and Open Water

Discover Scuba Diving is designed for people who want a safe first look at the underwater world without committing to a full certification course. It is usually the right choice if you are curious, short on time, or simply want to see how you feel in the water with an instructor beside you.

The Open Water course is different in both structure and outcome. It is a training path that builds real skills, introduces theory and confined practice, and leads to an internationally recognized certification that allows you to dive after the course is complete.

If you are visiting Saranda for only a few days and want a memorable experience, a discover session may be enough. If you already know that diving is something you want to keep doing on future trips, starting Open Water is usually the better investment.

The decision often comes down to confidence, time, and intent. Divers who are nervous but interested often benefit from beginning with a discover session, while travelers planning a longer stay can use that same time to build certification and unlock more options later.

Neither choice is “more serious” in a moral sense. They simply solve different problems. One gives you a guided introduction; the other gives you a structured entry into diving as a skill and long-term hobby.
